PACT for Fungal Toenails

Management of Fungal Nails

The term 'PACT' stands for Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy. This machine involves the use of Led light with photosensitive agents ,a blue gel, to produce an energy transfer and local chemical effect to the affected nail. This destroys the fungal spores without causing harm to the surrounding nail and tissue. The use of PACT is supported by evidence based practice, has no known side effects and is pain free.

PACT provides a great option for those unable to take oral anti fungals due to their health risks and side effects and for those who have found the topical anti fungal paints alone unsuccessful.

The treatment regime for PACT will depend on the severity of the case. In most cases the nails will be thinned with a podiatry drill  and then a series of treatments given.PACT appointments will vary from 30-40 minutes depending on how many nails are affected. There are 3 initial appointments 1 week apart and then a fourth or fifth at a months interval and then a a review at 3-6 months. Again this varies from case to case.

Please speak to our staff for further information on PACT.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the side of the toenail begin growing into the toe and surrounding tissue. They can cause pain, swelling, irritation and infection.Generally they are able to be treated conservatively by our podiatrists cutting the edges back to prevent further complications. Ingrown toenails can often be caused by poor cutting techniques ,the inherited shape of the nail plate, and trauma or damage from ill fitting footwear. In some cases surgical intervention is required for these ingrown toenails.

Ingrown toenail surgery

Sometimes conservative treatment isn't enough for some ingrown toenails. This is often the case if there is a history of recurrent toe infections or ongoing pain caused by the ingrown nail. We do both partial nail avulsions or total nail avulsions depending on the need. It is performed  in our clinic under local anaesthetic in the treatment chair. Most nail surgery takes 30-60 minutes depending on how many edges are required to be treated. The offending ingrown toenail edge is resected back surgically and then a cauterizing agent ,called phenol, is applied to prevent regrowth. The benefits of nail surgery with a podiatrist is that the procedure doesn't involve hospital stays, is done quickly and is pain free as it's  performed under local anaesthetic, no additional time off work/school is needed and it has excellent success rate.

Most health funds will offer a rebate for this procedure.

We do recommend bringing an open toe shoe to the appointment. We offer Friday appointmenmts for ingrown toenail surgery so that a weekend can be used to recover.
