Expert Diabetic Foot Care in Adelaide

Diabetes Can Affect Feet

Type 1 and 2 diabetes can impair peripheral blood circulation and can also contribute to nerve damage in your feet. This can lead to several issues, such as loss of feeling in your feet and difficulty healing from infection.

The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council ((NHMRC)recommend that all diabetics have their feet checked every 12 months at least, so any changes in a diabetic's foot can be assessed and managed as soon as possible and prevent further foot complications.

Vascular assessment-This will form part of the assessment and will help determine the blood flow in the foot. This can be done manually or with the aid of our doppler ultrasound.

Neurological assessment- In a diabetic, there is a higher risk of reduced sensations in the foot including numbness and tingling. This can be referred to as neuropathy . To help assess this the podiatrist will use tools such as a 10g monofilament and vibration tool amongst other things.

Skin assessment- There can also be changes to the skin with diabetes . Pressure areas and corns and calluses should be managed regularly to prevent ulceration and breakdown. Overall Nail health , regular nail cutting and management of any ingrown toenails are all important steps we can take to prevent diabetic complications .

Routine Foot Check-Ups

To prevent serious foot problems, we recommend having a regular check-up every two to three months. Our podiatrists will assess changes in blood flow, skin integrity and sensation to test foot health. We also suggest examining your feet every day and visiting a podiatrist if you notice any changes or issues.

Preventative Treatments

Regular visits will also give our podiatrists at Plympton Podiatry Centre a chance to prescribe or recommend preventative treatments to keep your diabetic feet healthy. Some of these treatments may include Routine treatment of nails and debridement of corns and calluses, footwear alterations and exercise. Orthotic therapy and soft inner soles to reduce the occurrence of diabetic ulcerations by addressing foot loading and biomechanical issues can be prescribed.
